Skip Post Declan
I know it doesn't bear thinking about but my choices are:

Coufal - loves the club and gives everything
Ogbonna - a cool head but no longer a spring chicken
Aguerd - Looked really assured early days but some clangers of late. If he can regain his confidence he deserves to be considered

I struggle after that.

If Moyes remains, next season's captain will be Soucek. No question about it.

Yeah and Benrahma will be forwards coach.

aldgate - he has been offered a lot more money but turned it down. Got to accept it - he's off.

Next seasons captain has to be Aguerd. I think he's a natural born leader and a quality player

Re: Skip Post Declan
Rice seems intent on a move to play champions league and get a pay day for his dad/manager. As a club we should still be trying to go all out to keep him. Obviously we can't do anything about champs league but there must be ways and means of handing him more money. Arsenal seem favourites to sign him but who's to say this season isn't a flash in the pan for them after a few average years. Chelsea/spurs look basket cases and i'm not sure he fancies the move up north. He must see that playing with paqueta next season could be very different under a new manager. Losing our best player and wasting the transfer cash will put us back years. All comes down to the ambition of the club/owners which as always will be the biggest stumbling block

Can't believe so many on here are bigging up JWP. Yes, when it comes to set pieces he is one of the best in the business. But apart from that he's a very limited player - very good at short, sideways passes, never carries the ball forward. Against us he only produced one decent cross. Gallagher is a much better all-round midfielder but probably not captain material.

Definitely! I can see them coming in for him. I'm struggling slightly with who else may do, given likely wages. Everton, if they stay up?

Re: Skip Post Declan
Definitely think we should at least consider JWP, though.

Like, a thorough assessment. Not just of his talent/position - but also him as a potential leader/skipper.

We do need a captain once Rice goes - and the current squad has few natural leaders in it. We were spoiled, really, under Nolan (average player, good skipper), and then Noble (good player in his pomp, very fine skipper).

Griff wrote an interesting post about why it is so important these days. He was bang on.

I think Maguire would be a no brainer at the right price, think Dawson, yea a slight risk that his form has fell off a cliff, but he hasn't just become shit and is still playing well for England. A leader too.

I would also take JWP, but would prefer Gallagher.

Re: Skip Post Declan
Scorch - Exactly: that fine line between where a fee/wage deal becomes good for us and the player...is always THE key transfer consideration.

Man Utd will want a fortune they won't get.
Maguire will want something close to a Man Utd wage deal he won't get.

So somebody will pay a bit more than they should on both fronts.

It all smells of Newcastle, to be honest!

El Scorchio 4:42 Wed Apr 26
Re: Skip Post Declan
SBBB- agree on valuation/fee. it's more wages I was getting at really. Of course Man U will probably gladly take a big loss to get him off their wage bill, but if he's on something silly like 200k a week, there's no club in their right mind who will want to pay anything like that, so to leave he'll have to really adjust his expectations down- and this is where that disproportionate wages thing becomes an issue and players get 'stuck' at those clubs or are happy to just sit there not playing rather than make half the money elsewhere.

I definitely agree he's not as bad as he's been made out and for England he's a better player. I get the feeling he's not going to want to sit there and collect easy money and also won't want to lose his England place so may well challenge himself somewhere and good on him, but where that is, who knows?

There is a point where he becomes interesting for us, but what point is it? 20mill and 80k a week?
Or at no price is he worth grabbing over an 'up and comer'?

Re: Skip Post Declan
A big difference between the 2 is the majority of Chelsea supporters I know were fond of Zouma and a bit gutted he left.

The majority of Man Utd fans I know would be delighted to get Maguire off their books.

southbankbornnbred 2:50 Wed Apr 26
Re: Skip Post Declan
Hence the comparison with Zouma.

Kurt couldn't play the way Chelsea wanted him to when they had the likes of Rudiger playing out from the back. But put him in a more traditional system under Moyes and he's thrived at times.

Moyes will like the look of Maguire. Make of that what you will. The Q is will the manager be around?!

southbankbornnbred 2:45 Wed Apr 26
Re: Skip Post Declan
Maguire is only worth what clubs are prepared to pay for him, not what Man Utd want for him as they try to recoup some of their huge loss. That's the big difference. Man Utd might well want £40+ for him, but I doubt anybody will pay it - not for somebody the wrong side of 30 who has had a terrible season.

As I say, it's not a huge issue for West Ham, as I think there will be other possible buyers for him (offering a lower price). Newcastle look like they're sniffing around, and the likes of Villa will have cash if they get into Europe.

The only point I'm making about Maguire is that he is a decent player in the right system. At Man Utd, either playing high up the pitch or trying to play out from the back while being pressed, he's at sixes and sevens. For England under Southgate, he plays much more as a 'traditional' English centre half - a role he is far better suited for because he understands it and the clarity around it. The reason he plays better for England is not rocket science: Southgate's defensive system is not particularly intricate compared with the likes of Ten Haag - and Stones does more of the 'sweeper' role playing into people's feet.

But as others have said, there are several other good options for reliable CBs. It's why I wouldn't pay much for Maguire. If Man Utd want a huge fee, and he wants too much in wages, just walk away.

JWP, on the other hand, might be a good acquisition in midfield and also offer captaincy.

Re: Skip Post Declan
I know he's been alright for England, but for Man Utd he's been absolutely dreadful for pretty much the past two seasons.

I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

El Scorchio 1:03 Wed Apr 26
Re: Skip Post Declan
Maguire would be appalling value for the fee and wages, combined with his age.

You'd hope there will be lots of alternatives out there who are younger or far cheaper/better value for money, or in an ideal world both.

Trouble is with those players who get a big money move to a top spending club and then get bombed out, they get stuck as not many teams are silly enough to take on their wage expectations, such is the gulf now between what they pay and what everyone else can afford. They might not be able to sell him at all. He's not as bad as he's being made out, but he is going to be a bit of a white elephant at that price.
